The Role of The Leader

Updated: Aug 24, 2021

There are so many types of leaders - the visionary, the charismatic team builder, the results oriented operator. Successful leaders can have a myriad of different strengths, styles and strategic approaches. But, are there specific skills needed to successful lead change? Absolutely!

Communicating Clear Vision

Even if you aren't a strategist or a visionary, providing a clear view of the future is essential in large scale change. The vision needs to go beyond financials and products. The most successful visions are integrated and include culture, ways of working and customers.

Bringing Everyone Along - The Shepherd

As mentioned in the change mentalities blog post, people deal with large scale change in different ways. It's the role of the leader and the those managing change need to ensure that everyone is shepherded towards the end goal. This can mean leading in ways that are outside of our comfort zone, which might include;

Create time and resources for forward momentum and shut off escape routes to old ways of working.

Allow others to bring ideas to the table and encourage them to think outside of the box. By developing their own solutions, they become invested in the change.

Be aware that everyone processes change differently. Expend energy to help bring along those who are struggling. Keep a pulse on team dynamics to ensure no one gets left behind.

Leading during change can be both invigorating and exhausting. By providing clear vision and ensuring the team is moving in the same direction, a leader can create sustainable momentum for forward progress.
